The Horn Fly
- Bloodsucking pests
- Found on horses if pastured in regions where cattle are raised
- Half the size of the Stable Fly
- Found on the back sides and belly of horses
- Remain on host day and night
- Breed in freshly deposited manure
- Lifecycle is 10 days in hot humid weather
Control
- Remove the breeding material
- Cover stock piles of manure to prevent breeding
- If possible move horses away from cattle
- Keep paddocks and stalls free of manure
The Horse Fly
- One of the world’s largest flies
- 350 species in North America
- It is the female Horse Fly that bites
- She bites with a bayonet-like mouth piercing the skin for a blood meal
- A full meal may take her many bites
- She feeds during the day, preferring sunny areas.
Control
- Remove the breeding material by controlling moist areas
- Female flies lay eggs in the spring in wet vegetation to hatch in late summer
- Horses need shaded areas for protection against these harmful flies.
