FALL FLIES

The Horn Fly

  • Bloodsucking pests
  • Found on horses if pastured in regions where cattle are raised
  • Half the size of the Stable Fly
  • Found on the back sides and belly of horses
  • Remain on host day and night
  • Breed in freshly deposited manure
  • Lifecycle is 10 days in hot humid weather

Control

  • Remove the breeding material
  • Cover stock piles of manure to prevent breeding
  • If possible move horses away from cattle
  • Keep paddocks and stalls free of manure

The Horse Fly

  • One of the world’s largest flies
  • 350 species in North America
  • It is the female Horse Fly that bites
  • She bites with a bayonet-like mouth piercing the skin for a blood meal
  • A full meal may take her many bites
  • She feeds during the day, preferring sunny areas.

Control

  • Remove the breeding material by controlling moist areas
  • Female flies lay eggs in the spring in wet vegetation to hatch in late summer
  • Horses need shaded areas for protection against these harmful flies.
